[Thinking Aloud] Millions of children around the world lack clean water

Photo Essay: Water & Sanitation

Click here to launch a slideshow presentation about UNICEF's programs that provide clean water and sanitation to the world's most vulnerable children.

Please join us in taking a moment today, on World Water Day, to reflect on and raise awareness about the millions of children around the world who lack clean water.

Despite the apparent abundance of clean water in the United States and most of the developed world, more than 1 billion people around the world lack clean, safe drinking water and more than 2.6 billion lack adequate sanitation services. Some 400 million children struggle to survive without safe water and basic sanitation, two basic health necessities we take for granted in the developed world.

UNICEF, with its formidable resources and global influence, is uniquely placed to lead the effort in providing sophisticated, large-scale, and permanent solutions to help those children threatened by unsafe water supplies and disease.

We invite you to view our photo essay at right about UNICEF's programs that provide clean water and sanitation to the world's most vulnerable children. Then, take a moment to share your comments below about how UNICEF's low-cost, high-impact water and sanitation programs save children's lives.

By increasing awareness about the global impact of the water crisis, you will help make a difference.

Rachel Philip:

I come from Tanzania, and so know the problem of poverty and lack of clean water. I managed to build a water well in one of the villages there and it did not take much time, and I had someone coordinate it for me, it took some money. So there must be way to coordinate things help build wells to help the people.
Glad to know of the efforts made to help the water situation
Rachel

Christina M. Rodriguez:

It saddens me to think that children are suffering in this way. We seriously take for granted our basic necessities her in the United States. Just the thought that innocent, helpless children lack clean water brings tears to my eyes and breaks my heart. I will keep them in my thoughts and prayers and hope that God, the world and I can help these kids to get what they need.

Karine Tchakerian:

UNICEF is one of the few agencies that brings hope and aid to those that have been robbed access to clean water.

Sandeep Singh:

Go UNICEF!!

I think that brilliant idea because we are actully making a diffrence in other's lives by providing them with clean water

Lisa Patino:

We need to be the difference this world needs for change...every child deserves a chance at life. Clean water is not as basic necessity; it's essential for human life and something must be done to help those in need! We must reflect upon this day and do more than just speak out loud, we need to take action to help all children in need. We too must get our children involved; they too need to make the difference, for they are our future leaders and possibly the solution to ending world suffering. May the Lord shine upon all of his children in the world!

Diana:

Water is the source of life. To think that some people do not have this basic source is devastating. If we can do something to help then we should. Caring about it is a good start!

Diana

Allison:

It is essential that we, in the developed world, solve the water crisis within our life times. We have the resources to make this possible, and therefore we are morally obligated to do it. No real advancements can be made in the name of human progress untill the basic needs of every human being are fulfilled.

Shante:

it hurts my heart to see that, I dont know what to do to help

In India basic needs of people was essential, however water problem have managed to solve in united forum like youth clubs, associations, government agency are in good, however managing the criteria is in low situation. Hope that UNICEF will take it's development activities in India with vide coverage.

rhoda mutiso:

am from kenya and talk about water problem and i know what you are saying.its good to see how childrens' lifes are changed by clean water .initially we never used to care about what we consume but i thank you for your efforts. At times we wish we could be able to do more than that but we are always limited, but we thank God you are there for us!

Himali:

My Country as whole has clean water but I have lived on a 100ml bottle of clean water for five day and it was not funny at all ,I agree with some when they say you don't realise how lucky you are.You have to be in that situation to understand the value of every single drop of water.

While I applaud the efforts of Unicef I would like to say that not only should we try to provide clean water to the children that do not have clean water but we should educate the rest of the children on this topic as well ,when I say educate the children I mean really make them aware and getting them involved on what is happening and prepare them for what is to come.I do not know of the rest of the world but I don't see that kind of awareness being created in my country.

kamga njile daniel:

hi i am from cameroon central africa in my country is divided into two big part the north and the big south the north is the part of lack water so as the coordinator of the private group for protecting childreen we are planing to sterilise all the existing wells in this north part of the country.

Mayanja Charles:

WATER IS LIFE

Safe, clean drinking water is one of life's most precious commodities. So precious to all human, plants and the animals.
More than one billion people do not have access to safe, clean water and 2.4 billion are without adequate sanitation. Every year more than 3 million people die from avoidable water-related diseases.

The implications are frightening - death, chronic illness and poverty are all darkly allied to the absence of clean water. However theres great need to preserve all forests, wetlands and water bodies from both human activities and industries.

Odukoya Olatunji Olugbenga:

I am really moved, and tears dropped down from my cheeks, I pour water away most times when I can not even finished drinking the one I fetched from the tap, pour away some that I feel that is not clean enough. Somewhere else, children die because of water even little to sustain their lifes they lack, I feel touched and ready to do what I am capable of doing to help as a volunteer to ensure that water gets to places where those children are. But I need somebody and an organisation to accept my free will.

Erica:

That was a very effective slideshow. I will pass it on to all my friends and family so that they can see for themselves how many children and adults around the world struggle without safe water & basic sanitation.

Timon:

God created water for all.It is very sad thing that most people on earth cant have water.I cry every time I think about it.If it was possible,I would turn myself into water that will be enough for every body.Keep up the good work UNICEF

george toussias:

my grandfather (god rest him) use to say ,the worst man of all is that who refuse to give a glass of water to a thirsty stranger

Zahra:

Hi

I think we could organise some groups to deal with the water issue with some facilities that nature give us in those local place, these groups must have some chemist, geologist and physician,... as volenteer ,after succeeding in one era it could help us to develope our method in other places,
I am ready to do something different,Are you?

Anna:

Hi,
I can't stop thanking UNICEF for what it's doing. I think that if there are so many borders between the countries with different systems, one thing can unite all of us: it is the willingness to help and support. I would like to become a part of UNICEF team. To give my strength, knowledge, my heart and soul, to know and believe that I could offer my help to a human being that is asking for this help, to those who need it.
Anna

hi, i am only a student in Canada but just this past summer i was able to go to Kenya. and since iv been back i have decided to start a water project...did you know that it would only take 9 billion dollars to provide the world with clean water..and in this past year the US spent 1 trillion dollars on war! i am working on raising that 9 billion...i think every one should really think about what it would cost to save a life...or to take it.
