In May 2006, an earthquake hit the island of Java, killing some 5,700 people. More than 37,000 others were injured in the disaster, which severely damaged or destroyed infrastructure, transportation and communication systems, homes and schools. About 40 percent of the roughly 130,000 people displaced in the region were children. With the generous support of donors, UNICEF has been working to restore these children's lives.

Above, two girls play with hula hoops near a UNICEF tent at the children’s center in Wedi Village. They are among more than 1,500 young survivors receiving care and protection at UNICEF-established children’s centers in the earthquake-ravaged area. The centers provide trauma counselling and safe spaces for children to learn and play.

Here, UNICEF Project Officer Dr. Kinny Peetosutan explains the dangers of measles to families in Oepura Village and tells them how to protect their children from the virus. The area has experienced repeated outbreaks of the disease, which is a principal cause of blindness in children and can lead to pneumonia, encephalitis and other fatal illnesses. UNICEF is providing vaccines as well as vitamin A supplements for children under five, to boost their immune systems, as part of a national measles campaign to immunize at least 90 percent of the country’s children against the disease by the end of 2007. The two girls below are waiting to be vaccinated at the Kopeta "Puskesmas"’ (community health center) in the north-eastern port town of Maumere.

I try to stay informed about world affairs, but I admit to knowing just the most basic facts about Indonesia before the tsunami of December 2004. Thanks to your educational campaign accompanying appeals for donations in the following months, as well as the field visit by UNICEF Ambassadors Clay Aiken and Ferry Salim, I learned how one person can do something to make a difference.

The earthquake in Java, which came a little over a year and a half after the tsunami, inflicted a double impact on people who had already been profoundly affected. Thanks so much for letting us know how they are doing, thanks to their personal resolve and UNICEF's assistance.

Hi

I think Unicef is doing a job which needs to be done by every person who is enough educated to help others, but due to some or the other reason he or she cant. My all good wishes to the team of Unicef who does a good job for a good cause and make others live happy.

chaitanya:

Ora:

I can't find the words...
Right now it is only tears of hope in my heart,
knowing that there ARE angels walking on this Earth, having true commintment to this Planet and all beings on it.
I only wish I could say the same about my self.
THANK YOU.

i am so happy to here that you are taking care of those children as much as you can. i am proud to here that they are doing great. the pictures are beautiful. the children look like they are really enjoying themselves. keep it up. may God be will you all, and may every dream come true for those children. they deserve only the best. i love children and its hard to see so many suffer each and everyday and i cant help them all. i try my best to be there for the ones i can get to. its sad and depressing at times but when i look at your organigation it helps to know children are being helped little by little. i may not know actually how it feels to be those children but, i can see there pain. i feel for them. i just wish i could take it away. i am glad that there are people out there like you who are willing to help those children. keep up the great work.

sincerly,
