UNICEF update on China earthquake

The earth is still shaking in Qinghai province after Wednesday's 7.1 magnitude quake. As of 1pm today, 750 aftershocks were recorded.

The human loss is also ongoing. According to the latest UNICEF situation report, 617 deaths have been reported, along with 9,110 injured and 313 missing persons.

While more than 2,000 people have been rescued from the rubble, there are certainly many more buried under collapsed buildings. Many of them are believed to be school children.

The worst damage was in Yushu, which borders the Tibet Autonomous Region. Yushu is designated a "national-level poverty county."

About 22,000 students are enrolled in Yushu, most of them of the Tibetan ethnic minority. To date, 56 of them have been reported as dead.

Many survivors will be affected by the loss of their schools. Local education officials have requested assistance in the way of blankets, school tents and education kits.

UNICEF is on the ground in China and is ready to dispatch disaster relief supplies to the quake zone.
