Thankfully, it appears that the tsunami caused by Japan's massive earthquake has not resulted in significant damage to the many coastal communities in its wake along both sides of the Pacific. Twenty hours after wreaking destruction in northeast Japan, the trans-Pacific wave has travelled as far as Chile, but without its original force or destruction.

UNICEF remains prepared to help distribute pre-positioned supplies to affected communities if and when the need arises.

Meanwhile, the extent of the damage is being revealed in Japan, where a series of fresh earthquakes shook an area far from the coast, and mudslides, fires and aftershocks have been reported. The death toll will certainly rise.

Our thoughts are with them in their dark hour.
