Anthony Lake is the Executive Director of UNICEF. This statement is in response to yesterday’s attack on the UN Compound in Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan.
Like all of you, I was horrified by the killing of our UN colleagues yesterday in Mazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan. I join with the Secretary General and all people of conscience in condemning these outrageous attacks against those whose lives were dedicated to helping the people of Afghanistan.
To our colleagues in Afghanistan, and to all currently serving in dangerous duty stations, please know that your safety and security are our greatest concern. We honour your courage and your commitment, and we will continue to do everything we can to protect you and to support your work. This work has never been more important.
All of us — at UNICEF and across the UN family — are bound together by our common mission. Today, we are joined in mourning.
Our most heartfelt prayers are with those who died, and our deepest sympathy goes out to the families of all the victims of this despicable violence.
