Disney and UNICEF launch P.L.A.Y.

In 1960 Walt Disney had a visionary idea: to create a tribute to the children of the world. That idea came to completion in 1964 at the World’s Fair, debuting as the “It’s a Small World” ride. Proceeds from admissions helped UNICEF save and improve children’s lives. Today, continuing this legacy, UNICEF and Disney are bringing the power of play to the world’s most vulnerable children.

The P.L.A.Y. initiative was recently launched in Haiti and Bangladesh, bringing portable playground units to children living in disaster recovery conditions and extreme poverty. Using this free form of play, children will be able to enhance their self-expression, tap into their curiosity, build their confidence, and prepare for school and learning. In Haiti, 5,000 children in five schools will be able to enrich their lives through play. In Bangladesh, 20 child-friendly spaces and child development centers will receive playgrounds, reaching more than 6,000 children.

As a natural recreational tool for children, play helps to develop creativity, imagination, and resiliency in order to overcome challenges. UNICEF and Disney believe that there is no better way to help children and their communities rebuild their lives and construct the futures they imagine than through the power of play.
