Child trafficking. It's a horror that no child should ever have to experience. But around the world, some 5.5 million children are trafficked for forced labor or sexual exploitation. Human trafficking is a $32 billion a year industry, one of the world's most profitable criminal activities. Children are especially vulnerable, and UNICEF is working across the globe to keep children safe from exploitation.
We recently had a visit here at the U.S. Fund offices from two UNICEF representatives, who described a successful UNICEF campaign to prevent child trafficking in Latin America.

The post UNICEF, MTV, and Calle 13 Join Forces to Stop Child Trafficking appeared first on UNICEF FieldNotes.

Thanks to everyone who participated in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF this year!
If you've got a box full of change, it's time to count it out and send it to UNICEF to help save kids' lives. Also, if you created a Trick-or-Treat Online page, be sure to update it with your offline donations!

We've heard lots of great stories from people everywhere about how they made Halloween count for kids this year. Email us your stories and pictures, or share them with us on Flickr.

We have our own story to tell...on Halloween, we hit the streets of New York City and raised nearly two thousand dollars from generous commuters and passers-by. It was a lot of fun, but best of all, it made us even more proud of the good work we do to put an end to 25,000 daily preventable deaths.

Tomorrow is Halloween, and while you're busy getting ready for your party and putting the last details together for your costume, we're just as busy here at Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF HQ.

We'll be on the streets of New York City tomorrow, asking people to make Halloween count by tossing some change into our giant collection box, or making a $5 mobile donation by texting "TOT" to UNICEF (864233).

Plus, it's not too late to get your own boxes! They're still available at our local retail partners Pier 1 and Hallmark.

Send your friends an e-card!

Seems as if our MySpace friends have been busy too! Thanks to our wonderful Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF spokesperson, Selena Gomez, we've more than doubled our friends!

And before you forget, send friends and family a free Halloween e-card and remind them to Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF.

One last thing... remember that you have the power to help save kids' lives!

The post Just one more day appeared first on UNICEF FieldNotes.

With only two more days untill Halloween, here's an update on where we are so far, and what you can still do to help!

This year we launched our mobile giving campaign, and have raised at least $400 so far! Our trick-or-treaters, Kitty, Cindy, Doogie and Thurston are competing for the most donations. Kitty is leading with Doogie not far behind. Sadly, Thurston is in last place, but we're sure his Daddy will bail him out. Help these kids help other kids by texting TOT to UNICEF to make a $5 mobile donation.

We've made 207 friends on MySpace, and our Facebook Cause has reached 4,022 members (a "Tribe" in Facebook terms), raising nearly $1260! While you're playing online today, join us and make a donation to help us reach $5000 in Facebook Cause donations by October 31st.

Perhaps you've been invited to, or are hosting one of the 625 registered Halloween parties to benefit UNICEF. No? Ok, then register your party now and help make Halloween count!

And last, but certainly not least, we have 3.5 million Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF collection boxes in circulation. Visit our Pier 1 or Hallmark retail partners to pick up a box, or create your own with this wrapper.

Imagine if each of those 3.5 million boxes collected just one dollar? That would mean nearly four million dollars to help UNICEF continue to respond and meet the needs of kids in Pakistan, DRC and so many other desperate situations.

Join us. Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF... because every kid counts.

The post Two days to Halloween! appeared first on UNICEF FieldNotes.

Since February, my-six-year-old cousin, Lula, has been saving her money up to buy a companion for her American Girl doll. In her universe, dolls are a big priority and one of her favorite pastimes.

Last week, Lula got her orange Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF collection box in anticipation of Halloween. Maybe because she is older, this time she asked questions and made a connection between the money she will donate and the children who will benefit.

"Six cents can save a life, Mommy," she said to my cousin, "and a dollar can give water to 40 kids!" Later that night, my cousin noticed that the Trick-or-Treat box had grown heavy. Lula had carefully extracted the contents of her piggy bank/American Girl Fund and inserted them into her box.

Even though her mother was overcome with love and pride at this discovery, she wanted to be sure that Lula understood the consequences of giving her entire nest egg away. Translation: starting over from zero and possibly waiting another year to purchase her American Girl doll, an eternity for a six year old.

Lula didn't blink. She understood. She insisted that she wants to help other kids who need medicine and clean water to keep them alive.

The post Would you give all you have? appeared first on UNICEF FieldNotes.
