My father, Danny Kaye, whose 100th birthday we are celebrating today, was appointed the first UNICEF ambassador to the world’s children in 1954. Though my father achieved legendary success in Hollywood, on Broadway, television and the concert stage, he often said working with UNICEF was his most rewarding role. He always went the extra mile. U.S. Fund for UNICEF President and CEO, Caryl Stern, along with UNICEF supporter Dena Kaye, will be on NBC’s Today Show on Wednesday morning to honor the life and talent of UNICEF’s first Goodwill Ambassador Danny Kaye. Hosts will highlight Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF and the contributions Danny made to our 62-year old campaign.
Thirty years ago, only one out of five children were immunized against killer diseases like measles and polio. Throughout the developing world, millions of children were dying of illnesses that had all but disappeared in the world’s wealthier countries. Since then, a near miracle has taken place. Now, four out of five children are protected by vaccines. Polio is on the verge of elimination. Measles and tetanus deaths have been reduced dramatically. This miracle did not happen by itself.
