On February 23, Montblanc launched its global “Signature for Good” initiative in Los Angeles. This marks the fourth global collaboration between Montblanc and UNICEF, which has raised more than $5 million since 2004 through various initiatives to support UNICEF’s education programs for children. In this new collaboration, Montblanc will donate 10% of the retail sales price for each item purchased in the “Signature for Good” collection. It is part of a yearlong charity initiative to support UNICEF’s education programs in the company’s efforts to ensure that children have access to a quality education.

The post Montblanc’s Signature for Good Campaign appeared first on UNICEF FieldNotes.

Many of us see Jamaica as an island paradise, the birthplace of Reggae music, and home to world class athletes. But Jamaica is not perfect: The country is home to one of the world’s greatest wealth disparities and has one of the highest homicide rates. These harsh realities create a difficult environment for children. I recently had the privilege of hearing UNICEF Jamaica Representative Robert Fuderich speak about UNICEF’s programs in Jamaica, and attending this event further deepened my appreciation for UNICEF’s work.

The post Improving the Lives of Children in Jamaica appeared first on UNICEF FieldNotes.

Three years ago, while visiting Malawi, MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell noticed that children were lacking one of the fundamentals of the schoolhouse experience: chairs and desks. So he partnered with UNICEF to start K.I.N.D.: Kids in Need of Desks. The program has raised more than $5 million to build desks and chairs for rural schools in Malawi. Watch a video to hear Lawrence O’Donnell speak about K.I.N.D. and announce an exciting new phase of the program.

The post More than $5 Million Raised for K.I.N.D. appeared first on UNICEF FieldNotes.

Tonight at 10:00 PM ET, Lawrence O’Donnell of MSNBC’s The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell will make a plea to viewers: Give kids in Malawi brighter futures by purchasing them school desks. This will be the third year that Lawrence has made this overture. In three years’ time, "K.I.N.D.: Kids in Need of Desks" has resulted in more than $4 million dollars raised for desks in child friendly schools in Malawi, a country where only one in five children have access to ordinary school furniture.

The post School Desks Can Change Children’s Lives appeared first on UNICEF FieldNotes.

With the passing of former Sen. George McGovern (D-SD), the world has lost a consistent champion for global development and the elimination of hunger and disease. Although he lost his race for President in 1972, his impact has been felt across the years on a wide range of humanitarian issues. In these partisan times, it is encouraging to note how he and former Sen. Bob Dole (R-KS) collaborated after their Senate careers to propose the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program, which has provided meals to 22 million children in 41 countries. I am also privileged to share that Sen. McGovern gave me my start on Capitol Hill.

The post Putting Aside Politics to Put Children First appeared first on UNICEF FieldNotes.

When violent events occur, such as the recent shooting of 14-year-old Malala Yousafzai, it's natural to want to protect children from the terrifying details as they unfold in the media. Yet in an age of pervasive communications technology, it is impossible to shield children—especially once they reach school age—from unpleasant world events. There are ways, however, that we as educators and family members can help youth to cope with and make sense of tragedy in the world around them. Here are some suggestions.

The post How to Talk With Children in the Aftermath of Violence appeared first on UNICEF FieldNotes.

It’s back-to-school time, and many parents are busy buying school supplies, backpacks and new clothes. But sadly, not all parents can afford to buy pen and paper for their children, or even send them to school. In post-quake Haiti, rebuilding education is a major priority, and UNICEF is working closely with the government to get children back to school. Supplies like school-in-a-box kits, notebooks, pens and pencils are essential tools in supporting children’s learning. Three children and their school director at a UNICEF-supported school in Port-au-Prince share their story.

The post School Supplies Help Children Get Back to School in Haiti appeared first on UNICEF FieldNotes.
