On March 22 the world celebrated our most precious resource: water. Here at UNICEF USA we celebrated World Water Day with the UNICEF Tap Project, a week-long event where we asked restaurants around the United States to charge $1 for tap water, something that's normally free. All proceeds would go to UNICEF's water and sanitation programs. We asked our volunteers and supporters to dine, donate and do their part. And they responded by recruiting restaurants, holding events and raising awareness.

But we wondered how other countries are celebrated the holiday. After all, it is WORLD Water Day. This week's photo features a young clean water advocate during a protection rally for the Uruaguay River in Argentina. Matt Feger is the UNICEF Tap Project City Coordinator in Washington, DC. He and the DC Tap Project Team report on their launch event which took place on March 20, 2010.

On Saturday night, the D.C. Tap Project Team hosted our Launch Event to kick off World Water Week. We must have had some good karma because the weather finally cooperated and helped us draw a great crowd. Friends, co-workers, volunteers, and some family members all came out in support of children around the world.

U.S. Fund ambassador Marcus Samuelsson hits the ground running on World Water Day with this call out to Huffington Post readers to "Eat out, drink up and save lives!"

Just as we take for granted the availability of clean drinking water when we sit down at a restaurant table, Samuelsson points out that chefs in every kitchen in America tend to consider clean water to wash their pots and pans "the least of my concerns."

Worldwide, more than 884 million people do not have access to clean water -- and half of them are children.

Read Samuelsson's Tap Project shout out and then follow his World Water Day recipe: "work up an appetite, enjoy your meal -- and save some lives. "

Because 884 million people would like to enjoy their meal too.

Throughout the country volunteers are finding new ways to promote the Tap Project and help benefit the over 900 million people worldwide who lack access to clean water. But you don't have to be a registered volunteer to volunteer. Everyone can take action and join the fight. Whether you dine at a participating restaurant, or contact local media, or tell a friend, every action in support of the Tap Project bring us one step closed to the day when zero children die of preventable causes.

As I stare at my empty glass of water, I can't help but realize that I am still thirsty but feeling too busy to do anything about it. I know that drinking lots of water is very healthy, and that it will help curb my appetite so I decide to finally take a break and get another glass. Up from my chair I go and over to the filtered water dispenser down the hallway and avail myself of another glass.
